There was a tweet (read: X post) I saw a few days ago and I want to give some thoughts about it. The post is a reply to a Reddit asking how do non-Bumiputera students can afford to further their studies in private universities. This specific reply shares the struggles he had financially.

My parents are minimum wage workers. Always lived paycheck to paycheck. They didn’t save because they simply didn’t have much left to save.

I worked almost two years (also minimum wage) to save up RM 6000 to get through the first semester before PTPTN would come in. I literally https://t.co/db4KX634s1

A reply to the post above said how the worse days are when school fees are due.

Waktu paling seram & sedih dekat uni dulu, bukan exam.

Tapi time nak bayar yuran.

Dahlah kena PTPTN (ambil course collab with UK university), tu pun tak cukup kena keluar KWSP arwah abah, buat part time catering etc. Kena pujuk akak dekat financing tu,

Upon reading that I was like, "I've been there". When you're in uni, in actuality, you barely see people talking about it.

I too have starved myself just so I could survive the rest of the week. I too have walked up and down the Bendahari office to get approval to pay fees with my mum's EPF fund. I clearly remember doing that for 2 semesters during Degree before I can afford to pay them using my internship allowance on my last semester. I was lucky I had loan when I was in Diploma and also lucky to skip a year due to credit transfer. Ofc, main thing was I'm privileged enough to enter public uni in the first place.

Unlike the first tweet, the hardest part for me wasn't feeling embarrassed about my situation. I didn't think needing help is something to feel shameful about. It was the fact that I'm robbing off my parent's retirement savings was what pains me most.

I know I don't necessarily fit the "poor" or "less fortunate" category but sometimes, I'm very humbled by my family's financial situation.

Just last year, our decade-old family's car broke down a day before Raya. So my dad borrowed the mechanic's car just so we can go beraya. We were visiting relatives houses in old Proton Wira which have wore off. That was so humbling, but it was better than not going beraya at all.

All these experiences never made me feel small or insecure. I never see it as a weakness, it's just something that could happen to anyone. Knowing how much harder my parents had it during my childhood, these little hiccups didn't even come close. All I could do was just to willingly accept.

When I was younger, my dad would take us siblings to cycle around our neighbourhood during weekends. I still remember we would go house-to-house putting flyers inside people's mailboxes. We would cycle and play around, but my dad would be doing all the ground work by our side. Then when we get back home, my dad would cut out more small flyers and we would do that a couple more times.

I remember feeling like my heart sank every time I see those flyers. "Is our family really that poor?", was all I could think about. It sank even harder to see people throwing it away.

That's why these days I just smile whenever people hand me flyers, because I'd rather not have the guilt of throwing them away. But whenever I do take it, I'll make sure to read them through before disposing them. I feel bad for the effort that went into it.

Funny enough, they still do occasionally distribute flyers now for their business - even 20 years later. My parents really taught me to feel proud of whatever you do.

Their favourite phrase is "Buat apa nak malu?" and as an anxious kid, I'm only now slowly taking that seriously.

My parents had me in their mid-20s, they didn't have much for themselves but they gave us their best. Although there were plenty of times I hope they had made better financial decisions, I still grew up always feeling supported and content. So now upon becoming a working adult, I do feel a sense of responsibility to lessen their tanggungan.

One day when they retire, I want to support them as much as I can. Although "children are not your retirement plan", but for them, I'm prepared if I became part of the entire plan.

My mum told me that a small space is enough for the two of them, she didn't want to live in a big empty house. She also said that when all of us get married, at least we, siblings should come and visit her once a month. It doesn't have to be often but she thinks it's important for us to not lose our close bond.

I feel that among my siblings, I'm the only one with actual backup plans. My older brother is kinda just winging it with his marriage and career, whereas my younger brother, he's just happy to have his girl. Anyway it's still too soon to tell but I'm just laying it out here for the future.

I'm glad that I don't have to worry about my family much. Things are much better now that my parents only have to support my younger brother in his studies. And also since I don't have to rely on them for financial support.

My mum have said this to me before, "Sekarang dah ada duit, dah tak pandang ye duit mama bagi" and I felt a mixed of sadness and a little offence taken.

So occassionally, I do let them spend their money on me and still act like I want them to pay for my stuff, even though they no longer have to do that.

I know this whole post is all "money money money" but I wish to show that money topic is not something embarrassing to talk about. Once you're mature enough, you'd realize that this could happen to you too and these days I'm avoiding saying things that may downplay other people's situation especially when most time, I don't have a single clue about it.

I felt a bit burdened when people ask for my opinion. I appreciate if people think my input could be some sort of help but it always gets to me that the advice probably was a good advice for myself but not to the person I'm advising.

Being an opiniated person, putting myself in a selfless position when giving other people advice is hard. When I told others to have self-control when I am struggling with it myself. Or when I advised to avoid impulse purchase but later proceed to do so myself. Or when I said it's doable but proceed to fail doing it myself.

I felt worse for giving those advice than to fail doing the thing itself. It's as if I declared to people that I'm prone to be successful doing it, when in reality, there's so many variables to consider as well.

Sometimes I hardly remember the failures I had bcos it was never considered as failures. I only see the progresses and aim higher thinking there's never anything to lose. Then when someone came to me and ask me how did I do it, I... don't quite know. I can't recall how much I struggled achieving it and thus, I don't have an answer to that.

That is why I probably suck at teaching and explaining. Even in my current intern job, whenever I solve the issue and move on to a new one, I always almost never remember how I managed to solve it. All I remember is how complicated it was and how long it took me to figure out one small fix. So when my team leader asked me, what exactly did the code do, I will always freeze in silence. It's not that I didn't know because duh, I fixed it. But it's just that it was hard for me to explain because the whole process is so complicated in my head.

I tried to be quick on my feet for a simplified explanation but often times ended up with my team leader just reading line by line of code himself.

I guess that's how it is in life too. When there's so many variables to consider and an advice isn't just a lengthy yes or no, but instead an entire lifestyle to put into picture, things will probably be easier to show than explained.

Like self-control isn't only about avoiding instant gratification and opting for delayed gratification, but it should be about finding out why does it have to be later and not now.

When I wanted to buy a PENTAGON lightstick while I was in Korea and even had that in the top of my wishlist. I found out that it was out of stock in all the kpop stores there so the planned purchase didn't happen. When I went to their concert in 2019 without a lightstick, I thought I might as well buy it some other time as there wasn't a reason to buy it in the nearest future.

You can tell I've been eyeing it for a long time since. Even the Shopee store that I wanted to buy from later not only marked up the price after a couple of months, but they also turned into an official store recently. Which means that from not being able to use the Shopee coins, to now being able to save more using them. Despite not having a budget for it, I immediately bought it during Shopee's 6.6 opening sale because of how good the deal was. I thought it was an impulse purchase at first, but then I realized how much I've been waiting for a good reason to buy and I guess, the right time just happen.

To me, that was how my self-control looks like. It's not something you would want to hear when asking for an opinion whether or not you should buy something, right?

But even so, there's no obligation for you to take the advice. We're too different to have a one answer fits all. I guess what I'm trying to say is, no external validation should be more defining than your own opinion. At the end of the day, the best choice is the choice you made for yourself.

Growing up as the only girl in the family is really nice. It indirectly means that there are no comparison between the prettier daughter, the nicer daughter, the cleverer daughter etc. Literally a blessing.

Gladly, I have 2 brothers who aren't any better than me in the aspects that I'm good at - which means I'm the better one in academic and rather at par with my brother in terms of our extracurricular. Heck I even entered a public speaking competition representing my school once while my brother represented his, and I won 3rd place while he didn't. Idk how that miraculously happened but in my eyes, I'm confident that what he can do, I can do better.

*cues Paint's Vine vs YouTube song*

Sadly, my family really don't see me being the "better child".

In fact, me winning a competition alone < my brother participating in a team competition, or
me getting better CGPA and dean's list for 4 sem < my brother with 1 dean's list on the 1 semester I did badly on. Yeah, I get compared to and things I am proud of are degraded instead.

But I'm always told that they love us equally, yet they don't act like they do. Are parents always this hypocritical?

I didn't even realize it hurts my self-esteem as much as it did until years later. I always thought I should do better and show more impressive results then maybe, they'll see my capability and acknowledge it one day. And honestly, in my 23 years of life, that almost never happened. Yet I never stopped trying my best anyway, bcos I reap what I sow. What I do today is for future me to gain, not for my parents or anyone else.

It's when I realize that my parents will never celebrate my achievements with me despite how big or small it is, that makes me stop hoping. It's nice when people tell me that my parents are so supportive when they let me do whatever I want, but little do people know, they really don't care what I do. And I get hurt by that too.

The bright side is that I'm forced to grow up faster knowing that they aren't an option for me to turn back to.

It's funny how families don't have to have a constant argument or even be broken, for it to be hopeless. But at the end of the day, they are always our biggest weakness and I genuinely despise that.

People around me have proved how I can literally be disappointed in someone for as long as I live. I know now that I can't do anything about it. I'm disappointed by people's assumptions on me. Like my knowledge and experience are less worth. They would pretend to know me but at the end of the day, they're not able to admit to their mistakes. Often times, keeping silent meant being stronger.

This goes without saying but, nobody knows yourself best other than yourself. I wish people would respect uncertain boundaries. I can't tell people A to Z about me, especially as a reserved person, but it's always better to ask politely.

People fake their lives and boast about it when in reality, they don't do as they proclaimed. I don't have trust issues because they're bragging, I have trust issues because they're only doing it for the gram and sometimes it's mentally unhealthy - for both the viewers and the uploader.

Apparently, people just won't listen. They only choose to listen to themselves more than others. I know that you may think you know more, but sometimes it shows when you've always been the kind to win over others. It's okay to have a stand, but always think lowly of yourself. Be stupid at times. Listen even if you know everything already, because sometimes there might be some input you probably would've forgotten otherwise.

I guess friends are always for the fun times. Giving off depressing thoughts equivalent to being a pain in the ass. If you're having a good mood, those depressiveness are just gonna spoil things. Lying to yourself sucks, but it's better than explaining a concern to somebody who doesn't even bother to listen.

So lesson time!

Depend on no one else other than yourself, for your own happiness. Have a positive outlook - on people and on life. And pray. Pray before bed. Pray in the car/bus/train. Pray for all your well-beings any time you thought of the Almighty. I've been guilty of forgetting about Him all the time. Yesterday was Raya Haji and I actually paid attention to the Khutbah. The ustaz (predictably) shared the story of Nabi Ibrahim and his son - Ismail. How the whole history of Qurban happened.

But one thing that caught my attention was the fact Nabi Ibrahim does not hesitate to put his love for Allah, rather than his love on beings. And that made me realise... what is happening to my generation?? We're all guilty of focusing most of our times on beings rather than on our sole Creator.

I personally am guilty doing mostly world-related things. The more I think about it, the lesser my deeds for the Hereafter happen to be.

So at the end of the day, your attention isn't really meant for others. It is only for yourself and Allah. Everything else is either a lesson or a challenge. Have faith in Him and you shall be guided well, insyaAllah.

I feel like I've legit killed myself. Not literally... though I felt like I'm slowly dying by my own actions.

I fucked up my FYP. There I've said it.

I feel like I haven't expressed HOW EXACTLY BAD I DID. I've been telling everyone it just wasn't good but deep down... I've never meant smtg as much as literal like this. As much as it breaks my hope and as much as I've tried, I just couldn't bring myself to deliver my best.

Honestly, lately I feel like my emotions are at its worst. Everyday I feel myself hating myself for hating someone I shouldn't. I feel like I'm being too ungrateful BUT I can't help but feeling wronged. It became worse when people are having it better. I think this is one toughest issue for me to overcome - being genuinely happy for others.

FYP was just another episode of my performance for 'Korean Speech Competition'. I practiced every single night, memorised, recorded myself, understand what I wanted to say... but I just wasn't meant to win. Not even win, in fact to even perform my best. Ok fine, I've accepted that. But I still can't bring myself to watch my own performance. It still didn't feel like it was worth watching. Even if I could learn and improve from it. I HATED EVERY MOMENT OF ME BEING ON STAGE.

I admitted I've procrastinated my FYP. I envisioned how I wanted it to happen and it felt like it was coming together smoothly as I was picturing things. Then once I've started, I couldn't believe how much I dreaded the process. I wanted to avoid meeting with my supervisor because I felt very much forced. It's not like I hated coding, I genuinely don't. I don't know why (I wished I knew) but I just wasn't feeling my best. Felt like shit even before presenting - the same feeling I had with the speech competition. I love what I'm doing... but that's the thing, I don't know WHAT'S WRONG????

I feel like I'm losing hope. Hope for myself to be any better.

For now, I don't wanna hear any of these two things - happy stories and complains. Oh and one more thing, still can't bring myself to tell anyone because I feel like unhappiness is the least thing people wanna hear amongst all of the happy ones.

On the bright side, I learnt new things. I learnt new vocabs during the speech and new codings too. So I guess I did gain some but not so sure about the losing part.

Plus, TRULY GENUINELY THANKFUL for iKON.
They gave me some of the most comforting shit I'm looking for.

That day it was someone's birthday. As a friend, I bought la a present. And I have never felt so taken aback by the reaction.

I have a rule of thumb when it comes to buying someone a gift. Firstly, I would spend money on you. I won't dig out all my harta karun and give an unused item of mine. I invest my time and money on new item, so that you could feel my sincerity. Secondly, if I have no clue on what to get for you (bcos I suck at taking hints and I'm a cheapskate, so what my friends would really want would be out of my budget fosho), I would buy you something that I personally want to own.

I have been keeping those rules of thumb ever since my primary school days. Every time I do that, I no longer have an attachment for those things and I hoped that my friends would like it just as much as I personally would (if I did get it).

I have heard someone telling me that people won't like the gift if I were to do that since it is what I like, not what they like. My honest opinion? Be grateful someone even had the consideration to give something to you on your birthday.

Honestly, I wasn't raised to accept gifts on birthdays. I couldn't even recall the last time my parents bought me a birthday present. Let alone my brothers. I could only remember the one time they bought me a birthday card and gave it to me one day earlier because my dad mistook my birth date to be 10/10 instead of 11/10. Still touches my heart just by the fact it was something the 6 year-old me least expected.

All I could remember from them was birthday treats. Now that is an annual thing, on every one of our birthdays. That's how my family celebrates it. With buffets and steamboats and sometimes, steaks and fine dining. Though I enjoyed them a lot... deep down in my heart, I really wanted them to surprise me with a present one day. It doesn't have to be fancy, just enough to be something I never once had.

It was always me earning it for myself. Sometimes, I do get jealous at people. Like the dreamy girl that I am. That is why I always like to give presents to those who least expected them, it made me feel like a godmother. Also, lowkey hoped it happens to me too.

I actually have a digital post-it on my laptop screen of my family and close friends' birthdays. I wanted to get eveeeryone on the list something, but unfortunately it's hard enough getting one person something. If only I have the money, I would!

So, I was actually very terasa when that person pointed out how "cheap" my gift was compared to what I was given. Siap check harga Lazada tu. Berkira tahap dewa kot. Padahal hadiah dia pun takde la bernilai mana. One sentence that really made me annoyed and had some sort of regret was "Lain kali aku belikan yang sama bagi kau". I said boleh je, but janganlah beli sama. Just bcos... where's the surprise?? But he said "Haa tahu pun kau pun taknak", as if what I gave was so... meaningless(?)

Oh how I wish, people could just be a liiitle more thoughtful.

UPDATE (29/11): Yesterday, I was hanging out with my friends including the person I bought the present for. Turns out, he never had such thing before. This is the first time he is owning one.  I don't know if he wanted to show his gratefulness or he just wanted to let me know... but that kinda made me feel slightly better than the reaction I got earlier. Cos I've always wanted to give someone something they never had before even if it was just something small and simple.
