If Among Us was a Kdrama: 365 Repeat The Year (Review)

by - December 19, 2020

What would it be like if we're living a life full of suspicion of the people around us? Well, I'm here to tell you this drama is exactly that!

"365: Repeat The Year" is a kdrama by MBC aired from March until April 2020 starring Lee Joon Hyuk and Nam Ji Hyun. It consists of 12 episodes, but don't be fooled because this is the perfect length for it!

This drama is about 10 individuals who repeated their lives a year from now in hope they can change their unfortunate present. It's a mystery and thriller drama, but unlike what it seems, this drama isn't actually dark.

It still has the fun and cheeky moments despite the thrilling aspect behind the drama settings. Although this drama also uses time travelling concepts, it doesn't focus on going to and fro much, rather it focuses on a race within the time frame which is actually a new light to this kind of genre.

Ji Hyung Ju (Lee Joon Hyuk) is a detective who is a fan of a comic titled "Hidden Killer". Shin Ga Hyeon (Nam Ji Hyun) is the writer of "Hidden Killer", who uses 'Maru' as her pen name. They both got tangled in a hidden twist of fate when a psychiatrist at Zian Clinic, Lee Shin (Kim Ji Soo), summons them and few others to join her in resetting their lives.

If you're looking for a kdrama that is very unpredictable and have plot twists after every episode, then this drama is for you. Remember when I said if life was Among Us it'll be this? You will not only be suspecting every single character that is involved, they'll also be (spoiler alert!!!!) killed along the way. Sounds exactly like Among Us, doesn't it?

Notice it's about 10 individuals... Among Us has 10 players too 👀

Detective Ji and Ga Hyeon is the duo you will expect to fall in love throughout this series. From having so-called fateful encounter to a very trustworthy ally, there is almost nothing to hate about this two. They're really the best partner one could wish for another.

Although it's pretty obvious, they're the last to fall victims, it's very hard to predict how and whom will cause it. If you're gonna watch this expecting to be all detective smart... don't even try, if you don't wanna grow grey hairs out of stress. From the beginning til the end, almost everything will be questioned. The writer of this drama did a great job of feeding us one answer but then bombard us with 10 other new questions.

A few takeaways that I can get from this drama are;

1. Everybody has a demon inside

Even when we try living our best lives doing good things and spreading as much love to the world, we are sometimes trapped by our own demons. Whether that be lack of parental love or betrayal from the people we love, sometimes this thing hurts us so much that we created a little demon that haunts us long after it happened. At times, we even became numb from it or we create some sort of coping mechanism to help us get away from it. And that can be torturous to ourselves.

2. We regretted a little too late

Although sometimes we regret so much that some things happened, they will eventually happen. We often worry too much about things we can't change that we're no longer hopeful to make it better. The saying goes "It ain't truly over til it's over".

3. Masquerading ourselves

People are the scariest when they have thousands of hidden cards up their sleeves just waiting to show their true colours. We almost never realize someone's true intention until something big happen. Trust is the biggest asset a person can earn and it's so hard to gain that back once it's lost. The thought of betraying people's trust on you, especially when they've given their all, makes simple life so damn complicated and I don't see why everybody is trying so hard to hide behind their masks.

4. Everybody is scared of death

This entire drama talks about people either being scared of losing their loved ones or losing their own lives. It's scary to think how little or how much people mean to each other until they're gone. That's just the bitter truth.

5. True friendship

I think the biggest takeaway from this drama is definitely friendship. The relationship from the leads has never once been romantic, yet it warms my heart seeing them. I love how Detective Ji's colleague always messes up with him for being a fan of Writer Ga Hyeon, despite their relationship never ending up that way.

The relationship between Shin Ga Hyeon and a female student, Kim Se Rin (Lee Yoo Mi) who later throughout the series, come across a little obsessive over her boyfriend, very manipulative and overall just not in her right mind, eventually speaks some truth about the impact of the society we live in, like the overwhelming standards parents have on their children.

All in all, I love this drama's colour. It's fast-paced yet not very mind boggling and it doesn't shove you with too much shocking events. Everything about this drama flows really well. Some things might not totally make sense but it was definitely worth it if you're looking to be on the edge of your seat with some mind-twisting suspense.

Didn't expect anything from this mystery/thriller/crime/time travel drama but I have to say, this one is pretty well-executed. At a glance, it especially leaning more towards a crime drama, but definitely more mystery than brutal. Love how they balances all this genre into a pack 12-episodes drama yet never once making it seemed rush or lacking in any way.

Highly recommended!!
